Sedation Dentistry in Columbus
Different procedures require different types of dentistry sedation. Some dentists may suggest a local anesthetic, meaning that you will still be conscious but unable to feel any pain in the treated area. Other anesthesia, like general anesthesia, causes the body to be completely unconscious. Some choose to be treated in this way because they would be uncomfortable otherwise. Below are some descriptions of sedative dentistry you could encounter.
Conscious Sedation Dentistry
This type of sedation causes you to still be conscious even though you are sedated. It is primarily used to place the patient into a relaxed state. The patient will not feel any pain as a result of painkillers, but they will be able to speak and answer the doctor when spoken to. Often, amnesia may occur in some patients. Conscious sedation usually causes you to not be able to remember the procedure, so you will not remember speaking, even though you may have spoken during the procedure.

Oral Sedation Dentistry
Oral sedation dentistry is less involved than other sedation, and not as immediate to take effect. It is also not as strong. The patient takes a pill that causes him or her to be less anxious for the procedure. Indeed, it is more akin to an anti-anxiety pill. It could take up to an hour for oral sedation to kick in. There is very little risk involved with oral sedation because of the low dose of drugs used.
