The Top of Their Class
An Endodontist is a dental specialist who has completed a total of six years of in-depth training: four years of dental school with two additional years of specialty training in Endodontics, (root canals).
These root canal specialists are able to perform all aspects of root canal therapy, including routine and complex root canals, Endodontic surgery and retreatments.
A root canal procedure becomes necessary when the soft tissue inside the root canal of a tooth becomes inflamed and/or infected. A variety of causes can be responsible: deep decay, damage to the nerve during a filling, injury, or a crack or chip in the tooth. Root canal pain can be identified as: tenderness to touch or chewing, sensitivity to heat or cold, and swelling, drainage or tenderness. Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms.
Ultimate Relief of Infection and Pain
The steps for root canal treatment are:
- In-depth exam, history and x-rays are taken. Local anesthetic is administered. A small protective sheet, called a “dental dam” is placed over the area, protecting it from saliva and isolating the tooth.
- An opening is made in the crown of the tooth. Pulp is cleaned from the pulp chamber and root canals with very small instruments to shape the space for filling.
- Root canals are filled with “Gutta-Percha” – a rubber-like material placed with adhesive cement to ensure complete sealing. A temporary filling closes the opening and will be removed by the dentist prior to tooth restoration.
- A crown or restoration is then placed on the tooth to restore it to full function.
- Since the unrestored tooth is susceptible to fracture and infection, it is important to have restoration completed as soon as possible. Antibiotics are usually prescribed until the tooth is fully restored.
- Endodontics saves the natural teeth and is far more affordable than other procedures. Most endodontically treated teeth last as permanently as other teeth.
