What are Tooth Veneers?

Teeth veneers are made of one of two materials: either porcelain or composite resin. While porcelain is the more expensive of the two, it lasts considerably longer than veneers constructed with composite resin. Dental technicians are experienced in constructing both types of veneers, and both can be made here in our office. If you choose to go with veneers that are made with composite resin, they can be shaped within your mouth. Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are constructed in the office and then anchored to the teeth using resin cement.

Your dentist will give you a mild sedative to reduce your amount of sensation. When the area is numb enough, he or she will use a cutting tool (or dental bur) to form the tooth into the desired shape. This process is so that the veneer can fit on to the tooth easily. Temporary veneers will be placed on to the tooth until the patient can make a second visit, at which time permanent veneers will be attached.

Who Should Get Veneers?

There are a number of reasons why you may choose to have veneers constructed for your teeth. One is to correct irregular or abnormal spaces between the teeth. This is often caused by genetics. As one grows older, the teeth become irregularly spaced, and their shape may become irregular as well. Another could be to improve the color of your teeth. Extensive amounts of caffeine will lead to the wearing down of your teeth’s enamel. If your dentist does not suggest teeth bleaching, he or she may suggest dental veneers to improve the color instead. Finally, your teeth may simply have worn down over time. Teeth can chip and crack due to minor injuries, leaving their shape awkward. Veneers can correct this as well.

Benefits of Veneers

Veneers help shape the tooth into a clean, smooth surface. Patients whose teeth are chipped or irregularly shaped can benefit from this advantage. Veneers can also be an alternative to teeth whitening. Call our office in Columbus today for a scheduled consultation and see if veneers are right for you.
