By Tim J. Mueller, for USA TODAY
Lionel Ferbos is widely considered the oldest still-playing jazz trumpeter on the planet.

He reads over that night’s music, handwritten with extra large clefs so his ailing eyes can follow them in the club’s dim light. The bartenders fix him a mug of hot water with lemon, to soothe and strengthen vocal cords. An oxygen canister hides behind his chair on the grandstand, in case his lungs falter, which they rarely do. When the lights go low, Ferbos blows into his trumpet and sings not like a man closing in on a century of life but like a young musician making a buck in the city.

“I’ve had a wonderful life with music,” Ferbos says. “As long as I have teeth, I’ll keep playing. You can’t play trumpet without teeth.”

Ferbos turns 100 Sunday and is the oldest still-performing jazz musician in New Orleans and possibly the USA. He has been fronting the house band at the Palm Court for two decades, a steady, $125-a-night gig he says he won’t give up because of his milestone birthday.

He has outlived Ronald Reagan, Lucille Ball and Mahalia Jackson— all of whom were born the same year.

Having a musician last that long and still play weekly gigs is a rarity and serves as a national living history lesson, says John Edward Hasse, curator of American music at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Hasse, a jazz historian, says he didn’t know of any another musician of Ferbos’ age in the USA who still performs.

“It’s remarkable,” Hasse says. “Someone who is still alive and playing the music who grew up in its formative years is just incredible.”

After our team found this article, WE HAD TO SHARE. Many people view teeth as replacable. They are…however all of your oral capabilities are not. This was a great example how this mans career was soely dependant on his oral health.

THE TOP TEN THINGS THAT CAN DEPEND ON ORAL HEALTH:
1.) The trumpet…for the scanners out there:)
2.) Taste – With dentures you lose 70% of your tasting capabilities.
3.) With dentures you also lose 75% of your chewing efficiency. Bye Bye Ribeye…
4.) In some cases, Clearness of speech
5.) Confidence.
6.) Sex Appeal.
7.) Career opportunities. Of 750 people surveyed in a recent dental magazine – 91% of people questioned stated that teeth was the first thing they looked at.
8.) Bone loss. Missing teeth can lead to extreme bone loss. Some severe cases may not even qualify for any replacement options.
9.) Social Life. Many people who can’t keep their teeth in avoid social sitations all together. Could you imagine losing your teeth in a bowl of soup!
10.)Physical appearance. Tooth loss can lead to the sinking in of cheeks. This causes more wrinkles and the appearance of a sunken in face.

Gum Disease and Missing Teeth Could Raise Women’s Risk for Breast Cancer

The British Dental Health Foundation released a rather shocking report this month that may cause many women to step up their oral hygiene routine. The report, released on February 11, 2011, states that women with gum disease and or missing teeth may be up to 11 times more likely to develop breast cancer.

Sweden’s Karolinska Institute studied over three thousand patients, ending with 41 women developing cancer. The women with gum disease and tooth loss were found to be 11 times more likely to develop cancer. This study is said to be the first to examine the relationship between gum disease, tooth loss and cancer. More studies will be necessary in order to fully explain the link, if any, between gum disease, tooth loss, and cancer.

Gum disease is continually popping up in the news as a link or result of serious health concerns. Diabetes, preterm birth, and heart disease are only a few conditions related to this preventable disease.

Normally, people might hesitate to air their bad habits before millions. But Jessica Simpson is not normal.

Wednesday on the “Ellen” show, one day after she admitted to Jay Leno that she chomps on Nicorette gum not because she ever smoked but because she loves the buzz she gets from it, the pop-turned-country singer revealed she brushes her teeth “maybe three times a week.”

Simpson said she has good reason to shun the twice-a-day rule followed by most humans in developed nations, and strongly recommended by the American Dental Association:

“My teeth are so white and I don’t like them to feel too slippery but I do use Listerine and I do floss everyday,” she said. “But I don’t brush them every day. … My lips just slide all over the place … I can’t catch up with my mouth. I need a little coating.”

Instead, she’s figured out a better system: she uses “a shirt or something” to wipe her teeth. And since she’s not repulsed by her own breath, everything must be fine!

“I know it’s gross but I always have fresh breath,” she laughed. “It’s really weird but I have great breath.” Jessica Simpson says she brushes her teeth only three times a week.

Be that as it may, Simpson may not care so much about what’s coming out of her mouth when she has no teeth in it. Since she’s the host of VH1′s “The Price of Beauty” and an ambassador for Operation Smile, pearly whites are kind of essential to her career. According to dentists surveyed by ABCNews.com, by not following the basic tenets of brushing, Simpson is committing sins that could damn her to oral hygiene hell.

“The biggest risk she faces is losing her teeth,” said Dr. Sally Cram, a periodontist and American Dental Association consumer advisor spokesperson. “You need to remove the plaque and bacteria that build up under your teeth and gums at least every 24 hours. If you don’t and you let that bacteria collect for two or three days, you start losing bone around the teeth and that can lead to decay.”

Dentists: Jessica Simpson, Please Brush Your Teeth

The problems extend beyond Simpson’s mouth. While the former Mrs. Nick Lachey and the ex-girlfriend of both John Mayer and Tony Romo may be single now, at the age of 29, she could be looking to have a child soon. Bad gums don’t bode well for babies.

“A study at the University of North Carolina showed that women who were pregnant and had bleeding gums or bad oral hygenie were seven times more likely to give birth to premature, low birth weight babies,” said Los Angeles-based dentist Dr. Harold Katz.

And polishing her pearly whites with a shirt won’t ward off gum disease.

“Think of your gum as a little turtleneck collar around your tooth,” said Cram. “Your job every day when you brush is to sweep down under that collar and take out the bacteria. That shirt isn’t really going to get in between teeth and it’s not going to get down underneath the gum collar.”

Potential suitors, beware: whatever she doesn’t rub off with that shirt, Simpson could pass on to you.

“She’s gaming the system by trying to polish the front part of her mouth but the rest may be full of plaque,” said Katz. “She should be careful about kissing or biting people. She may be transfering the bacteria from the back of her mouth to her tongue and on to them.”

Steve Buscemi has been hillarious in multiple movie favorites over the years. People assume that when celebrities generate so much money that they would easily fix the appearance of their smiles.

Here are answers to the question their fans have asked for years! Celebs SPEAK!

Steve Buscemi just earned a lead actor Emmy nomination for his role as mobster Nucky Johnson on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” which scored 18 nominations overall Thursday. But he says he’d never have gotten to where he is now if he’d heeded early advice to change his smile.

“I’ve had dentists who have wanted to help me out, but I say, ‘You know, I won’t work again if you fix my teeth,’” Buscemi, who also won a Golden Globe last year for the role, said during The Hollywood Reporter’s recent drama actors roundtable.
Buscemi isn’t the only one who has refused to correct his pearly whites.
“True Blood” star Anna Paquin is often questioned about her choppers. “I find it rude when someone asks me why I never ‘fixed’ the gap in my teeth!” she recently told Us Weekly. “Blood” was just nominated for four Emmys.

Kirsten Dunst admits she’s faced pressure to straighten up her teeth, even from her mom. “That’s one of the things I like about me. Messed-up teeth are so sexy,” she once told InStyle. The actress was just 13 when she was nominated for a Golden Globe award for “Interview With the Vampire” in 1995; more recently, she was voted best actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in Lars Von Trier’s “Melancholia.”
Singer Jewel landed her first film role, in 1999′s “Ride With the Devil,” thanks to her crooked grin — even though she had no acting experience. “The main reason Ang wanted me was my teeth,” she told the U.K. Observer of director Ang Lee. “My character grew up lower-class, working the earth with oxen, ploughing, stuff like that.”
When asked by MTV News why she never fixed them shortly after the movie was released, she said, “I just never had the money before and now I don’t have the time.”
Miley Cyrus continues acting despite her lower teeth not lining up.
“I like these crooked. I love my teeth,” she told Elle magazine in July 2009, adding that her then-”Hannah Montana” co-star and dad Billy Ray Cyrus “won’t let me fix my teeth or cut my hair.”

Sedation Dentistry and Breastfeeding

Sedation dentistry is an amazingly easy way to take care of your dental needs in one easy visit! Many of our patients choose to get their dental work done under conscious sedation for many reasons including fear of dentists or time constraints. The way conscious sedation works, is you take a prescribed medication the night before and day of your appointment, someone brings you to our office, we administer nitrous oxide and you doze off into a “Twilight Sleep” or “La La Land!” Then we do our work getting your mouth healthy and beautiful, someone takes you home and you wake up with all your work done. The best part is you got some really good sleep and you don’t usually remember us working on you at all! Amazing isn’t it?

With Sedation Dentistry, there is some information we would like our nursing mothers to know while deciding if sedation dentistry is the way they want to go.

Can I Breastfeed After Taking Triazolam?

We applaud your efforts to provide the best start for your child! Nursing has been shown to help with the development of the jaw and mouth muscles as well as strengthen teeth! However, we do not recommend breastfeeding for a period of 24 hours after the last dose of triazolam. And, we remind families that the nursing mother should not “cuddle up” and take a nap with the nursling. Triazolam is a sedative and can diminish your abilities to fully meet your child’s needs.

What Can I Do To Prepare For This Period?

The first type of preparation we advise is preparing to feed the nursling during this time. Depending on how often the child nurses, you will need to pump and freeze.* Generally speaking, an infant requires 50 calories per pound of their weight each day. (A 10-pound baby requires 500 calories.) Breast milk contains 20-22 calories per ounce. You will need to supply 2 and a half ounces of milk per pound for your baby. (A 10-pound baby will require 30 ounces of milk.) Please keep in mind that babies react differently to new situations. You baby may eat more or less than this amount.
Plan ahead! Although some mothers can express several ounces very quickly, most mothers will require some time to set aside the necessary reserves.
It is vital that you protect your future supply and prevent infection! While unable to nurse, continue to pump every 2-3 hours. This milk should be discarded and not saved for future use. Be sure to stay well hydrated to assist the medication in evacuating your system.
Your child may feel anxiety at the disruption of their normal schedule. Please plan for there emotional needs as well. Practically speaking, you will not be able to be the sole provider of their care while you are recovering yourself. Be sure a familiar loved one is available for snuggling, singing, and playing games with your child.

Why Is It Recommended That I Not Nurse?

The short answer to that question is that sedatives, which triazolam is, are not recommended for children under 3 years of age. There are no formal or informal studies available for review. Although, only a very small amount will be available to pass through the breast milk, there is no way to know what dosage is safe for a child or infant to ingest. We do know that sedatives can cause respiratory distress in children under 3 years of age. The distress requires immediate attention or can be fatal. Because of the lack of data and severity of the known risk factors, we advise that you do not nurse for a period no less than 24 hours after your last dose. Plan ahead-pump.
*For more information on freezing breast milk or breast feeding please consult your physician, a lactation consult or a representative of the La Leche League.

At Grove City Dental, we want our moms to have 100% healthy mouths with the best option for long term care and a gorgeous smile! While we always want to put our babies first, we have to realize that in order to properly take care of them, we must be healthy too! Healthy includes our mouths. Many infections and diseases start in the mouth and can lead to more serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes!

With 46 sports and events, including 13 Olympic sports, the 2011 Arnold Sports Festival presents fitness and a wide range of entertainment for all ages March 3-6, 2011. The festival has expanded into the world’s largest multi-sport fitness weekend since its 1989. People from all over the nation gather in the heart of Ohio to see the continuous dedication, and the almost unbelievable bodies of the competitors that participate. Approximately 175,000 sports fans are expected to see 18,000 athletes compete in a variety of more than 40 sports and events at 10 premier venues.

Who would have guessed that with all of the characteristics taken into account when competing, that a winning smile was one of them? This is not typical thought that comes to mind when you think of the Arnold Classic. With new cutting edge techniques, Dr. Schumann and his award winning team in Grove City, OH are changing smiles for competitors all over the nation. This year they are the official sponsor of the Rock Star Bikini division.

Every day more and more people are having their smiles transformed to enhance their overall appearance. What used to be reserved only for the wealthy and famous is now available for every day people who want to enhance the overall appearance of their smile.
Recently Dr. Schumann and his team worked their magic on the 2011 Rock Star Bikini Winner, Ingrid Romero with their advanced Zoom! Whitening techniques. Now cosmetic dentistry is within reach at affordable monthly payments that can fit anyone’s budget! Whether you want something as simple as having whiter teeth in 1 hour or having a brand new veneers, it doesn’t matter. Cosmetic Dentistry can make it happen for you!

Studies show that a whiter, straighter, more attractive smile is associated with increased self-confidence, beauty, and a healthy lifestyle. A beautiful smile will give you more self confidence and minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles, giving way to a more youthful and energetic appearance. In fact, 88% of all people in North America say they always remember someone with an especially attractive smile. Studies show that your smile can make you look heavy, thin, older and younger. Your appearance is based on your teeth casting an illusion that could be for better or worse. This is caused by the shape and style of your teeth related to the shape of your face.

If Mother Nature did not give you a smile that complements your face, getting one is still possible.
